Kenji Harada is a versatile pianist with musical influences from the rich mix of sounds in Detroit. Starting piano lessons at five, he later began accompanying for church at the age of thirteen, bringing the soulful sound of Southern Gospel to his music. Growing up, he was also exposed to a wide range of musical styles — from Motown and Gospel to Country and Hip-Hop. This mix of genres have shaped Kenji’s personal style.

Kenji’s professional career began in Hawai’i’s theater scene, where he music directed numerous productions that helped him refine his skills. A key milestone was his role as associate music director for the North American tour of The Music Man, which opened doors for more opportunities. After returning to Hawai’i, he collaborated with local star Mahi’ai Kekumu to produce a performance for the American Cancer Society’s Hope Gala, while also exploring Latin music with Afro-Criollo Sound.

Since moving to San Francisco, Kenji has worked with many organizations including Berkeley Repertory Theatre where he has been a part of the world premiers for Paradise Square, Kiss My Aztec!, Goddess: A New Musical, and Galileo: A Rock Musical. Other notable collaborations include work with Phantom of the Opera’s Franc D’Ambrosio, Dan Koek from London’s West End, and Ashley Loren from Broadway’s Moulin Rouge.

The Bay Area not only broadened his horizons but also led to a creative partnership with singer/songwriter Eli DeYoe. Together, they have produced a series of singles and music videos which you can see above, and they recently celebrated the release of Eli’s debut album The Start Of Forever.

Today, you can find Kenji all over the Bay Area — music directing for a local theatre, performing in a pit orchestra, or in his home studio producing music with local artists.
